traveling Portland to California

I am traveling from Washington State to California this week. I have been looking at the traffic cams through Grants Pass ect. If I encounter too much snow I was thinking of heading to the coast. My question is, what is the best route to take from Portland to the coast?
  • Interstate 5 is always plowed quickly and cleared after snow storms.....usually the best and certainly the fastest route straight south. Yes, 101 is usually a good alternative....but since the coast areas have also been getting snow.....you might consider sticking to 5 instead of the slower and windy in places 101. I think from Portland I'd come down 5 to Eugene and take 126 over to 101.....
  • I would travel south on I-5 to OR hwy 38. Go west on Hwy 38 to Reedsport and Hwy 101.

This is one of the best routes to the coast from I5. 38 is about 30 miles south of Eugene so well before you get into the mountains.
  • Totally. I have pulled my 36 foot fiver over it with ease. There is o ly a short stretch across a bridge and down a canyon that is the least bit narrow. Be sure to plan a stop at the elk viewing area.
  • Thanks great advise. I do carry and can install triple chains so maybe I'll stick to I5 unless its really ugly
  • If you stay on I-5 you also have to content with going over Mt Shasta which keeps you in the mountains for a longer period of time.
