travelling through New York heading south

the GPS keeps giving us road warnings of low clearance,no RVs and 20lb max propane on the parkway. I have no idea what route to go to get from Pawling, New York to Virginia, or if I can even get there from here.

We're driving a class A, 25' motorhome

  • We traveled east from Washington State along 80 all the way to Illinois. Walmarts when we could and truck stops when we had to. We had a specific purpose for that leg of the trip, now we are just meandering south and then back west, then north to home. Thanks for all your suggestions.

We leave Conn, not far from Pawling,NY....you can go either of these two ways with no problem.....84 to exit 1 in Pa....then down 209 to Stroudsburg to 80 west to exit 306..then 33 south to 22 thru Allentown,Pa to 78 to 81...nice ride..some hwy and some 2 lane good road...or...go 84 from Pawling to 87 south at Newburgh to Sufferin,NY and then 287 west to 78 west to 81....all hwy but not a bad ride....
Someone said watch the trucks....they are not a bother at all...and there are trucks no matter where you go....Have a nice trip...Chuck
  • route 81 works. There are LOTS of trucks so mentally
prepare yourself...they are well behaved (IMHO) but
know that come nightfall any rest area is FULL with
trucks running engines so plan accordingly...walmart
of which there are several options.
  • We are aiming in the general direction of Locust Grove, VA and then to Newton Grove, NC I will plot your suggestions on the map and see if we can't resolve some of these issues

I-84 west to Scranton PA, then I-81 south will take you into Virginia.

You will bypass NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore and D.C..

Where are you going in Virginia?

  • Good route info. I 81 runs the length of VA. You can cut over to the DC area on I66 and use 17 to hit 95 above Richmond. I 64 will take you mid state.

X2. That's a very good route with a number of options off I-81.

  • Just know this: if it is a Parkway in New York, you cannot be on it.
