Trip Coventry CT to Gettysburg PA

In mid-September we are taking out Kodiak 21' TT to the Gettysburg PA area. Last time I drove in that direction I-81 west of Milford was totally ripped up. Does anybody know about conditions on I-84 in CT, NY,PA. Then I-81 PA to Harrisburg and then from Harrisburg to Gettysburg? We are new to dragging a TT and this will be our longest haul to-date.

TIA

  • Trip was successful! Lots of rain on the way there. I84 construction is still a mess.

US 15 from Gettysburg to Harrisburg is good road. I traveled it today.

I81 from Harrisburg north to Scranton is always being repaired. Especially north of mile post 120 or that area.
I have not traveled I84 east of Scranton to Milford for a couple years.
Last I traveled it, the road was kind of rough but, not too bad.

However, I'm from Pennsylvania so I'm conditioned to bad roads and delays.

When traveling in Pennsylvania, assume you will encounter road construction/repairs. You're usually not disappointed.

Check 511PA.com for travel and construction info.

    Enjoy your trip to Gettysburg.

I476 from Scranton to Allentown is the northeast extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. A toll road. I wouldn't chose that option.

Checked out 511PA.com looks like no matter which way there is something going on. I guess I'll stick with plan-A: 84 to 81 then 15 to Gettysburg.

If you are trying to get around the on going construction...I would go 84 to 684 to 287 thru White Plains...stay on 287 over the Tap...to I-78 to I-81...probably the best at this point...Chuck
  • There is bridge construction on I-84 shortly after you cross from NY in to PA at Milford. Depending on the time of day there could be a significant back up. The only stretch of I-81 north of the junction with I-78 that I've driven has been at the Rt. 309 interchange where there was a bridge replacement going on - but that was over a year ago so I don't know what the status is today. I was just in Harrisburg two weeks ago and there was no construction on 81 between the Cameron St. interchange and I-78.

You can avoid the I-84 bridge project north of Milford if you do this - I-84 east in to PA and get off at the first exit in PA (I think it's Exit 53) and go through Milford via Rt. 209/6. Staying on Rt. 209 south takes you through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (nice drive but not always fast). You'll have a short stretch on I-80 around Stroudsburg, then get on Rt. 33 south to I-78 west and on to I-81 south. Very do-able with your rig.

Our usual route to Gettysburg via I-81 is to take I-83 south, then use Rt. 581 to get to Rt. 15. Traffic will be heavy in Harrisburg whether there is construction or not.
  • We just drove from Newark I-687 to I-84 to Willimantic and the roads were good. Don't know the road conditions south of Jersey since we air traveled this time.

  • how about using i-476 as an alternate. It's longer but better?
  • Most of I81 north of I78 is very bad and the parts that they ?fixed? are even worse.
