Trip from Cleveland OH to Franknenmuth MI

Has anyone taken a trip to Frankenmuth MI from Northern Ohio recently? I will be driving my 34 ft motorhome and towing a car. I have made the trip several times in the past but do not remember the best route. My choices are the Ohio Turnpike West to either Exit 64 or Exit 59. to get to US 23 North to Michigan. The other choice is stay on US RT 2 off of I-90 and follow that to US 23. There seems to be a lot of construction on the turnpike so if anyone has recently travelled that highway it would be nice know the status and any major delays. I want a simple and easy way without a lot of traffic to get to US 23. Thanks in advance for any help.
  • Thank you to everyone who offered information and tips. I made the trip to Frankenmuth and returned home today. I read most of your posts after I got back as I did not have WiFi in the campground where we stayed. I took the Ohio TP on the trip up, exiting at exit #64 (per the GPS) which took us to I-75,to I-475 and then to US23 North. It rained most of the way and it was very heavy at times which slowed us down. Total time 5.5 hours. On the return trip I expected the GPS to repeat the same route only in reverse. This time it wanted me to exit at RT2 East. I went two miles farther to the turnpike and got on at exit #59 The construction was plentiful although there were no workers to be seen anywhere due to the holiday. The condition of US23 was awful in spots as noted in a previous post.. I hope they repave most of the road before I make this trip again. We enjoyed Frankenmuth as always. Thanks again.
  • Was just in MI. last week. Construction around Ann Arbor was not terrible but time of day does dictate how heavy traffic is. From the Ohio/Michigan state line I thought the roads were atrocious all the way up to the Flint area. Not only the interstate, but side roads as well so drive a little slower than the crazies that do 80. I pulled my 37 ft. TT and had a few drawers and a cupboard door open up on me from the jarring bumps...and I did 65 mph.

Frankenmuth is a nice little town if you have never been there. Not much else around there to do but shop and eat. If you golf and want to play a round go play The Fortress, great course just outside of town.
  • We make most of this run a lot. Last time was a month ago, but my recent search said that construction was not bad (planning the weekend).

Were I you.... (I hate paying tolls.)
I would get to Rt2 and take that west until just past the Ottowa NWR (this is a ways past the big sweeper at Davis Bessy) and watch for the sign for 579. That is a left off Rt2 and other than the speed limit change in Williston, (watch for the Barny Fife there) it is fast and clear to 51 that is less than a mile from 280.
Get on 280 north, switch to I-75 SOUTH to 475 west takes you right to 23 north.

Rt2 over towards Oregon gets to be a real PITA with local traffic.

I would take I-75 to I-275 (michigan) to I-96 West to US-23 north to I-75 again to Birch Run exit and turn right.. NOTE Disount mall to left, General RV to right also Frankmuth.

NOTE two.. That is kind of related to the route I took to where I am at now.. I understand there is some construction on (-75 in the Detroit area, but The route I gave avoids Detroit 100%, YOu get close... (Romulus) but no Detroit.
  • The only stuff you will hit in Michigan is just north of Ann Arbor for about 10 miles as they widen US-23. Get there at the right time and it is not even a slow down but hit rush hour and it will add a half hour to 10 miles.

North of there is not bad. Did it yesterday in a car and no problems just plenty of LEO for the holiday
  • Just for fun, lots of construction on 23 north of m14 and i96.
