Trip from Myrtle Beach to Nova Scotia and Back

I'm using my outdated MS Streets and Trips and trying to layout my summer trip. I have a Sequoia SUV and will tow a 27' TT. I sort of set my route and destinations and figure on an overnight every 200 to 250 miles. My major stops so far:
1. Gettysburg, end of June for 7 day rally. See Washington sights.
2. Boston
3. Bar Harbor, Maine. and Arcadia NP
4. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Labrador
5. Quebec, Ottawa, Niagara Falls
6 Return to Myrtle Beach

My concerns are avoiding traffic in and around NYC. Suggestions?

Traveling through Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, best routes? Are there bridges or will I be using ferries? If so, how much in advance do I need to make reservations, etc.? Again, any suggestions, etc. would be appreciated.

Also looking for recommendations for campgrounds, restaurants and things to see and do along the way.

Thanking you in advance.

  • We did part of what you are talking about last Summer. Some stops were for the Grandson's history lessons.

    From Orlando:
    Gettysburg
    Boston (via Albany and across)
Bar Harbor (avoid US-1, Terrible condition and slow)
(backtrack to) Mt. Washington (I am a Civil Engineer, ret)
    Bangor
St John, NB (all land route; no ferry)
    Amherst, NS (Bay of Fundy)
    Halifax, NS (Titanic memorial)
    Grand Falls, NB
    Quebec City
    Montreal

    Home

Great trip in six and a half weeks.
  • Thanks for your info and comments. Last year, my inaugural trip was to Alaska. Left in the middle of May and returned at the end of October. 16k miles and 143 nights. Something I could never have done on a two week vacation. LOVE my retirement.

My answer to your questions as to how long? As long as it takes.... The Gettysburg Rally is my only cast in stone dates. I'm very flexible after that. I'll make reservations one or two days in advance, unless you suggest some areas require advance reservations, like Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone last year, I can shoot for target dates. So far, if I'm having a good time, I can spend more than a couple days, etc.

Again, thanks for your input and suggestions.
  • How long a trip are you planning? You do realize that the cost of the ferry to NL and back will be expensive - possibly $1000 for your size of rig. You 'll want to spend several weeks there - it is a very big island with plenty to see/do.

Note - above poster mentions taking ferry from New Brunswick - it actually leaves from North Sydney, N.S.

Distance from Niagara Falls to Myrtle Beach is approx. 1000 miles (we have done this many times).

I would consider breaking your proposed itinerary down into 2 or possibly 3 separate trips so you can give the different areas the time they deserve. You are being a little unrealistic unless you are full timing and have many months to travel.
  • More or less finished or trip to NL using S&T 2011. Unless you really like the very indirect back roads there are few choices for getting from A to B. S&T will take care of that very easily. Set your road type preferences. There is only one ferry required. The one to get to NL.

The biggest headache is getting around the whole Baltimore, Philly, NY mess. Many choices there. Put as much distance between your route & city center as possible.
  • From Gettysburg, get on 81 and take that to 84 to the Mass Pike. That'll avoid NYC. In Boston you could stay in Foxboro, MA at Normandy Farms. From there take 495 around Boston to 95. Take that to Bangor and then go over to Bar Harbor. From Bar Harbor to New Brunswick I'd take either 9 or 1. 9 may be faster and 1 may be more scenic.

To get to New Brunswick you need to take the ferry out of Sydney. I'd take the short ferry to the Rock. From Newfoundland there is another ferry to Labrador. When we were there the paved roads ended not too long after getting to Labrador so we didn't go any further. Others might help on Labrador (except bring insect repellent).
  • My question to you is how long of a trip are you planning to take? This seems to me a very long trip to do.
