Hi Donna. The other thing is the motion of pulling out the phrase book shows that you will be trying to speak in their language. The other thing it does is signal those around you to step up and help with phrases as well as the subsequent cultural exchange. This same approach works well all over the world. We used it recently for Italian in Italy and for Arabic in Morocco. Morocco proved unnecessary as their second language turned out to be French and their third language Spanish, both which we speak. However it did still invite the cultural exchange which is a lot of fun and informative in a Muslim Nation. Side note, if you are in the south of Spain, take the fairy trip across to Tangiers Morocco for a few days. Cultural highlight of our 9 week trek through Europe.
