Trip to Yellowstone

Last year we were planning a trip to Yellowstone but we had to cancel, we're planning a new trip this summer.

We'll be driving a 2004 Ford F-250 6 Ltr. Diesel, which we just spent $6,000. dollars to replace the Injectors, Turbo and EGR Cooler Valve so it should be good to go. We're pulling a 35" Sabre 5th Wheel.

We have reservations at Grizzly RV Resort in W. Yellowstone from 8/26 to 9/2/26. We'll be coming from Mount Rushmore and seeing as we're not fond of steep grades we will pass on Route 16 to Cody. We plan to stay on I-90 to Bozeman then head south on 191 to W.Yellowstone. This was a recommended route for those people like us from RV TechMag from 5/11. I was wondering, seeing as that story is 5 years old, does anyone have any recent information on that route? It looks like it goes through the valley and should be an easy drive for us but would appreciate any recent information.

  • Thank you all so much for your speedy replies. We're feeling a lot more comfortable about our choice to take 191. The advice about taking Bear Tooth Hwy. is well taken as we were thinking about doing that but do you think that trip can be done in one day or would it be better to try and get a motel for an overnight in Cody?
Had not thought about Little Bighorn Natl. Battlefield or Devils Tower, we'll have to re think this and perhaps make some changes in our trip. Thank you again.
  • Nice scenery along that route, at least once you're past Bozeman. (You may be driving thru parts of town there.) Sorry, I don't know about construction; there's usually some somewhere in this area during the summer, since there's such a short season for it. Grizzly is a great CG choice, IMO.

While along I-90, I hope you have time to stop at the Little Bighorn National Battlefield for a day (2 decent CGs nearby for an overnight). It's well worth the stop. And of course Devils Tower is off I-90 and worth a stop as well. The KOA there is right at the base & has great views of the tower; there's also a no-hookups NPS CG inside the park.

Have a wonderful time in Yellowstone!
  • Yup- good route. Not sure if there is any construction thru there right now but it won't matter. Even if you have to stop for a bit you will love the scenery. Have a ball!
  • if you want to avoid grades, you've chosen the best route (for you)
A whole month! you should be able to see a whole lot of country. Don't leave out the Grand Tetons, and be sure to drive your truck out the northeast exit of Yellowstone and then make a loop, taking the Bear Tooth Highway, then backing up and taking the Chief Joseph highway and down to Cody and back into Yellowstone through the east entrance. You'll see a lot of grades, spectacular scenery, etc.
