Mexico's SAT (customs office), is not issuing vehicle permits for TRUCK CAMPERS with trucks over 1/2 T....which means F250/ 350 and over if yours is a Ford, this law does not apply to MOTORHOMES of any weight, only truck campers.The law previously had been on the books, but only recently enforced. I have been traveling into Mexico for over 25 years with a F250 and 350 truck and never had a problem. I have been contacted by some other camper owners who experienced this roadblock.To verify this I went to the customs entry point at the Texas Border and consulted with officials there, I was shown the law and discussed possible solutions to it. One suggestion was to pay a $200 "adjustment fee", and the other was to change the classification of my truck camper from "pickup with camper" to "motorhome" on the vehicle title (if it is a motorhome on the title it will be permitted).I checked with the DMV in Texas, and there is a process to change it by permanent mount to the truck and filing a VEHICLE MODIFICATION FORM..Until this is changed ---- TRUCK CAMPER OWNERS BEWARE, IF YOU PLAN ON TRAVELING INTO MEXICO, especially if you are traveling into Central America, because the southern Mexico customs will not let you return to the USA.

The topic is well discussed in the RVing in Mexico and South America forum. Thread was started by an expert on the present situation and actions being taken.

For me it's a no brainier, I simply don't go to Mexico and haven't been there in 20 years, plus it's Mexico lost as I see it.

Even the Mexican guys I talk to say don't vacation in Mexico, just stay away. That law probably does more good than harm.

As a person who has traveled in Mexico every year since the late 60s, and currently lives in Mexico for 10 months out of the year (and has for nine consecutive years), I have to tell you that the direction that Mexico is going in is finally disturbing me, too.

Please dont try and compare US violent crime rates with those in Mexico. It's just plain silly. Per capita murders is the only meaningful comparison (though many organizations WITHIN Mexico say violent crime is very underreported) and Mexico is far and away ahead of the US. Yes, there are very dangerous cities in the US, just like there are in Mexico.

Kidnappings really are rampant in Mexico. It is also one of the most underreported crimes in Mexico as people try to pay the ransom.

In the US, kidnappings are ridiculously rare. Think about how often you hear about a kidnapping in the US that is not a family member kidnapping another family member. Just so rare.

There are THOUSANDS each year in Mexico, and those are the reported ones.

Two points: Yes, I dislike driving through El Paso-- we generally take the "long way" around it (I 10 west bound to loop 375 north to U.S. 54 north to 3255 north to 404 west back to I 10). In fact, I know of CG's in Deming, NM who have written instructions on how to avoid driving through El Paso. But, to be fair, I dislike driving through LA and Houston as well.

Second, as compared with generalizing about a country (the U.S.), I suspect most Europeans would not hold El Paso up as a shining example of the typical city in the U.S. nor should we expect that they would flock there on vacation.

Both of us have traveled the world extensively. Finding a border town anywhere that represents the "best" of a country is difficult at best.

I don't mind someone posting about their bad experiences in Mexico. It does bother me that someone else says they shouldn't post their experiences if it's not positive. Why be afraid of information? Why try to shut somebody up? The readers can decide for themselves.

It is O.K. there are a lot Mexicans that rather go to Canada or Europe instead of the USA, and a lot of Europeans that like Mexico more than the USA.

Mexicans and Europeans are afraid of the shootings at the malls, churches, drive by and having the children shot in schools, so some of this guys posting here live in glass houses, I guess they will not go to Europe either, it is better if they stay home, they might get shot at work by a disgruntled co-worker.

Yep, amazing how little knowledge people have of the real world. Same thing, mugging, robbing, carjacking, etc. goes on between Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan, another twin border cities area.

Open up your mind and look at the reality in which we live. I can't travel to another planet just yet so I have to make do with what we have. So far, it's been an experience not to be missed. Trust me, I've had my run-ins.

Just think how narrow my life would be without living and traveling in other countries? God didn't bless America, it's the whole world. Wake up.

The decision as far as not going to Mexico for me was after some very good friends of mine were robbed at gun point by Mexican taxi driver and dumped in the street. While trying to seek help they were attacked again ended up with broken ribs, ankle and arm, plus the Mexican police told them too bad. They had to walk back to the border to get medical help in the USA. They were only there for 4 hours. My Mexican neighbors who were born and grew up in Mexico won't even go there even for a visit.
For any one who wants to go to Mexico, be my guess, there is nothing in my statement that is telling anyone else not to go and for you to twist my words make YOU closed minded!
