Thanks for all the great suggestions. We will note them all down and work out a route. Will post that back and maybe get some help re sites to use?
Re Houston, general view seems to be don't bother?.. We had a thought to go there in the hope to visit the space centre. Is it an open to the public thing, like the Cape at Florida (which we enjoyed a lot) and if so is it worth a visit. And Galveston seems a pretty option?
I have arranged our rental to be a one way thing that we drop off in Dallas and catch an internal flight back to LA to get home. I thought the trip across Texas would be long enough in one direction!
So we can maybe fit in some more of your ideas as we will have more time without having the long trek back across TX etc.
Re Las Cruces vs El Paso, my concern with LC would be the weather/temperature. Looking at the forecast it seems it is regularly a good few degrees below freezing each night (being at 4000 feet altitude I guess that is to be expected). Our rental is not winterised so I would be concerned about freeze ups. Is that likely? Not done this thing before so not sure how bad it has to get before that happens.
EP on the other hand is a fair bit lower and has temperatures that seem to drop not much lower than 1 or 2 degrees C at night. Still chilly but at least safe from freeze ups.
Anyway, thanks for all the ideas. Pls keep em coming and I will post up the route for any site ideas.
