Tulare CA to Patterson CA - which cross route?

The last time we travelled 99 (2 years ago) it was horrendous. This time, from 58 to Tulare, it was quite decent. We're on our way from Tulare (where 99 seems to get rough again) to Patterson (I-5) ...

My vote would be option 1, 99 north to 198 WEST(not east) to 5 north. 5 is a nicer drive, better condition, usually with better traffic flow.
