Tunnel Mtn, Banff Bear Warning

From Calgary Herald, 11:00 this morning.

A black bear warning has been posted at the Tunnel Mountain campgrounds in Banff National Park.

Bears are frequenting the campgrounds — Village I, II and the Trailer Court — in close proximity to campers.

Officials are reminding campers that anything with an odour could attract wildlife to their site. They remind campers not to leave coolers, food, garbage, dishes, pet food, bottles and cans unattended.

If you see a bear, they ask you report it to Banff dispatch at 403-762-1470.
  • I know all about the handgun laws, and have no trouble with them. Traveled in Canada many times with no problems. We just leave our handguns home.

My QUESTION was, should I try to bring a shotgun and bear repeller ammo? If not, suggestions? I LIVE with bears all around, and they sometimes do NOT play nice. That is why Colorado Division of Wildlife allows me to have rubber bear ammo (which is NOT easily purchased by just anybody).

We don't really hate American guns, I've been an owner of various long guns and hand guns over the years.

Without the proper long gun permits, I would never attempt to cross a gun into Canada, you risk seizures, huge fines and canceling of your eligibility to cross into Canada in the future. Hand guns are never permitted to enter the country.
  • Uhhmm...no. Firing your weapon in a National Park..or Provincial for that matter, will see you in jail. And it's not that we dislike American guns...many many like guns, whether US or German, or Swiss. We have different laws than the US about ownership and availability of guns in the home, or RV, or whatever.

The best thing I can offer to an American citizen that has a gun that they want to bring along..check with the BP. Long guns are often permitted, with the right paperwork. A handgun is not going to be allowed in. And really, if that offends a person, then they have to decide whether or not to visit outside the US. They can't go to Europe, nor Mexico either. In fact, I can't think of any country a US citizen 'can' go to, armed. It's all about choice.

  • I know Canada hates American guns, but bears are no fun. We are leaving for Banff this weekend. Should I bring a shotgun? I have rubber buckshot and rubber slugs to be used to drive off bears. They can get pesky where we live. What trouble will I have at customs? We've not tried to bring guns in in the past.

Also going to Lake Louise and Jasper if that makes a difference.
