If you are wanting advice on the best route, here is our 2 cents. We go west almost every year from N. Florida.
Take I-10 to Mobile. Go US98 to US49 at Hattiesburg to 1-20 at Jackson, MS.
Stay on I-20 to Fort Worth, where you will connect with US287 all the way to Amarillo, where it intersects I-40 to the west.
Opinions will vary, but we like this route. If you want more info, PM me. Of course, if you have to go to Houston, this won't work for you.
