Yes, I've commented on this before. I do think this is a good route and have taken it to East Texas a good many times.
However, I would not go on to DFW on I-20. I would turn up on US 69 (for one example) and go up to US 82 near Sherman, Texas, then follow US 82 to US 287 near Wichita Falls.
Another alternative would be to stay on I-10/I-12 to Layfayette, LA and then I-49 up to Shreveport then take I-20 as above.
There are good state parks at Mandeville (Fontainbleau) and at Madisonville (Fairview/Riverside), just a few miles further. A small private park also at Nacitoches (Nackatosh)--all these in Louisiana.
This sounds like the best option if I were traveling through Texas. Texas will dry out and recover pretty quickly, but they've had a ton of flooding in the Dallas/Fort Worth area as well as Houston and San Antonio..Texas DOT is your new best friend....good luck and safe travels...Dennis
