My two cents worth.
I have spoken to many diesel mechanics and have found that it is the emissions system that has changed. This is with the 08 and newer Cummins engines up the the 2010 when the DEF engines were mandatory.
If I were to take my particulate filter out and replace it with a regular exhaust system and change out the computer part, forgot its name, my motor would not skip a beat on high sulfur fuel. That tells me the only difference in an 2008-2010 to a 2005 engine is the emissions system. The engine to my knowledge loves sulfur fuel it lubricates the moving parts. I have seen RV's here in Mexico with 2008 to 2010 engines that have been coming here for years and have yet to hear of problems caused by the Mexican diesel.
