When you are in Sault Ste Marie, don't forget to visit Mackinaw Island. There are ferries that go to the island all day long. When I was there last, is was cool and breezy. We hiked around and found arch rock. There was a stairway that went down from there to a beach area below. That was on the sheltered side of the island and it was beautiful down there. We sat there for a long time just enjoying the beauty and the sunshine.
A visit to Mackinac (still pronounced Mackinaw) Island is an excellent idea and well worth the trip, but you can't get there from Sault Ste Marie. Just drive down I-75 a bit and you'll be able to access the island from St. Ignace. Be sure to give yourself a full day as there is a lot to see. Rent bicycles or take a carriage ride to see different areas of the island.
