Upstate NY to Titusville Fl

We have done this before but never attempted going thru Washington and Baltimore because of all the traffic (we heard).
Is there a good time to go straight down I95 thru these cities or should we just keep going down to I78 to I81 and I66 and 17 to I95 around Fredericksburg. I think it adds an hour or more.
Thanks
  • Weekend and go through Balt Washington area after 9 or 10pm or before 4 am and it will be pleasant We found that the "ON" ramps are really on! Lines of cars and sometimes double lanes trying to jump in front of us not caring that we cannot stop on a dime. We no longer try and get out of anyones way. If they are too dumb to look as they merge, then they are either going to hit that gas pedal hard or slam their brakes on....had too many time for us to scurry in a big rig. We do late at night or not at all and have taken route 81 south of richmond north as well.
  • Driving through Baltimore and DC is not a big deal after 9 or so in the evening. When I used to do that route between where our kids lived, I'd drive through DC about 10 at night and stop in Fredericksburg for the night so I was through the mess when I started in the morning.
  • He could also get off I-95 in Delaware and pick up 113 and go across Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

  • Remember, propane isn't allowed in the I-95 tunnel in Baltimore.

Where in upstate NY are you? I-78 seems to me to go more to NYC and its suburbs than what I think of as upstate New York, but perhaps that's a problem in my understanding of what upstate encompasses.

My favored route from Vermont to Florida is crossing into New York, then I-87 to I-88 to I-81, and then take I-77 to I-26 to I-95. From further west in New York it may make sense to take I-81 all the way, or I-390 to I-86 to I-81, or maybe I-87 to I-84 to I-81 if south of Albany.

Based on OP's sig, he's above Albany. That being said, 2 choices for him to avoid DC/Balt or 3 actually. Take the routes you suggested OR wait to leave until nighttime and go down 87 to NJ and p/u 95 there then thru DC/Balt between 10pm and 4am

  • I like 66 to 17 to I95. Adding one hour to a 30 hrs trip doesn't mean much to me when it makes the drive easier.
  • We did the Washington/Baltimore I-95 route from upstate NY just once. Never again. We prefer the I-88, I-81, I-77, I-26, I-95 route, even if it does add a little more time and a few more miles.
