Upstate NY, any suggestions?

Sept is a great time to go, in addition to all the other suggestions would be to hike Mt. Marcy(if you like to hike) it is long but easy and you have great views of the Adirondack mtns. Good luck with your surgery.

Sorry; I just have to comment on this one. We stayed there two years ago and I'd rate it on the low end of the scale for a place to stay (views were beautiful though - and I didn't use the word SIGHTS).

Stay somewhere else and visit the park.

Other parks to consider are Lakeside Park between Syracuse and Rochester but further north, Sampson State park (nice park with large spaces on a former Navy Base in the Finger Lakes region) and our favorite - Robert Moses State Park near Massena (real up-state).

Sorry you had a bad experience, but that's not been ours. We were there a couple weeks ago and had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. Half the sites were empty, which suits us just fine! September would be a great time to go as the crowds would be minimal to nonexistent.

One more vote for Watkins Glen area. Great winery tours, 20 miles to Corning Museum Of Glass and Market Street, Captain Bills Dinner Boat ride and so on. There are several nice campgrounds within 2 or 3 miles of Watkins, I have been to all except Smith Park which I plan on getting to soon. Good luck with your surgeries and future travels.

Association Island is a great place to relax and enjoy the sunsets over Lake Ontario.

Growing up in Western NY and having camped all our lives, I would head to the Finger Lakes area. Watkins Glen has a nice township owned RV park - Chute Park.

And the SIGHT seeing made me LOL.

That time of year the whole area is something to see but Lake George, Saratoga Springs,Lake Placid(also has some Olympics stuff),Finger Lakes are all great places.

The Thousand Islands area is a great place to visit - get to Robert Moses State Park camping too. Also recommend the Finger lakes region for sightseeing. And - by the way - June is little black fly season - and a good time NOT to visit.
