Upstate(albany)NY to outerbanks

Hello,we are looking to go to the outerbanks NC, & are looking for any advice on a route from albany ny that is not terrible with traffic as we have have heard it's pretty much a traffic nightmare in places, thank you in advance
  • We travel from central MA several times a year to our daughter's on the Outer Banks. We take 84 to 87S, Garden State, 95S, after the Delaware Memorial Bridge, 13S. After Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, follow signage to 168S, which will take you to OBX. The routes suggested above are good, but dealing with 95 through NJ is not bad, and the route down the DelMarva Peninsula is nice. This is also much shorter, since you are starting in Albany.

Our last trip to the Outer Banks:
    I-88 to Binghamton/I-81
    I-81 South to I-66E
    I-66E to U.S. 17
    U.S. 17 to I-95S/Fredericksburg
    I-95 to I-64

One change we would make is take I-66 to exit 42-route 234 to I-95. U S 17 is getting heavely traveled, Rt 234 is a nice 4 lane highway.
  • Thank you for the advice, exactly it's supposed to be relaxing, not stressful.thank you again
  • Take I88 to I81 then I66 to US17 to I95 to I295 to US460 to I64 to the Chesapeake expressway to OBX.

    I-88 to Binghamton/I-81
    I-81 South to I-66E
    I-66E to U.S. 17
    U.S. 17 to I-95S/Fredericksburg
    I-95 to I-64
  • Yes avoid I95. Its always horrible unless your on it between 10pm and 4am. Last southern trip we took I81 south and cut east on I66. I 95 south after Richmond VA is ok.
  • Ditto or go in the week hours of the night while passing through NJ, Balt/wash:B
  • Avoid 95 at all costs, even if it takes extra time, head for Scranton PA, then 81 south, after you clear Washington start heading east...we dont go camping to get aggravated , and the GW Bridge , Throgs Neck 95 South route beats the heck out of your setup and the traffic is bad, so we opt for more driving but a nicer route....
