US 191

I'm already planning a trip to the National Parks in Utah and then taking 191 to Wyoming and then on to Mt Rushmore for the spring.
Would I be safer to pull the trailer in mid-May? My concern is the higher elevations, but don't want to take the trip when it's too hot since we won't have electric for the A/C for days on end. We have dogs and they can't take excessive heat. Thanks.
  • I was thinking along the same lines Cloud. We're presently in Port Isabel Tex laying low until mid March. Then we'll stay in Albuquerque until things in Utah warm up. By late April, I figure we'll check the temps and stay around Flaming Gorge area until Yellowstone warms up. From there on to Mount Rushmore and finally home to Scranton Pa by Mid to late June. Hope this works.
  • We were at Bryce Canyon back on May 20, 2012 for the solar eclipse. Bryce is at 8-9,000 ft elevation so temps were comfortable. The next day we drove through Zion to Hurricane UT to restock at the WalMart. Hurricane is at about 3,000 ft elevation and the temperature there exceeded 100 that day. That night we camped at Jacob Lake AZ near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Jacob Lake is at 8,000 feet and we had comfortable sleeping temps.

By June 3rd, we had worked our way through Capital Reef, Arches, Canyonlands and then on to Vernal UT with OK temps. Vernal is at about 5,000 feet elevation and the temp on that day exceeded 100 when we visited Dinosaur National Monument.

We plan to go back to UT next Spring, leaving NJ by the 3rd week of April with hopes for cooler temperatures. When things get too hot for us, we will escape to Grand Teton and Yellowstone for much of June.
  • I lived in Moab for many years and it's quite often really hot by mid-May - hot enough you won't be able to leave your dogs. It was in the mid-80s a few years ago in mid-March. Further north you should be OK, but mid-May in Moab can be miserable, the gnats are usually out by then also.
  • I wouldn't worry about excessive heat mid-May. However, those places will be very hot during the summer. You might want to continually watch weather reports as you travel for snow.
  • Weather in that area during May is of the "wait a minute, it will change" variety. We were in WY and SD near the end of May this year. We had rain, wind, sun, clouds, and one night with six inches of snow when we were camped near Deadwood. Just a few miles away, there was no snow at all.

Just bring along clothes that you can layer and remove, and have a good time.
  • My crystal ball is in for service!
Depends on the weather that Mother Nature has in mind.
Generally, you will not have any problems.
