We got off of the Interstate at the Breezewood exit this spring and took US30 east to go to Gettysburg. There are two stretches of about 3 1/2 miles each with 8% to 9% grades, halfway decent shoulders, and truck ramps where our exhaust brake was worth it's weight in gold. (40' DP towing a car). Worse, though is the climb to the top of each of those. If you met someone coming down westbound as you're going up eastbound, and he is having control problems, you are on the outside of the road hanging onto the cliff, and have absolutely no shoulders and no escape route.
Stick with the interstate.
