Just and update. Thanks to all of your input we decided to take US 31 in Indiana and found it to be a good road. US 31 is closed at I-465 but the detour is well marked and put us on a good road for a few miles before we got back on US-31. With the by-pass around Kokomo the drive was pleasant and we had no problems.
