US 34/Big Thompson Canyon Construction Update 12/23/16

News reports and updates from the CDOT website reveal that the choice between a short but intense closure versus a longer, less intense closure has been made.

US 34 in the Big Thompson Canyon will be closed starting in October 2016, and lasting until June 2017. This decision was based in large part on input from Canyon residents, who have to commute or have businesses in the Canyon. Phase I will be from July 2016 to October 2016 and will involve some rock blasting that will involve closures of the roadway for 20-30 minutes. Phase II will be the part that will be the closure mentioned above. Traffic only open to Canyon residents, businesses, school buses and emergency personnel.

H E R E - Big Thompson Canyon Project is more detailed information on the project. The construction may impact some travelers this summer, but from what I've been reading, it will be worth it, and should reopen for most of the travel season in 2017.

Alternate route recommended is CO 66 from Longmont to Lyons, and US 36 to Estes Park, for those folks coming in from I-25.

My mistake, yes it was Riverview at the bottom of the canyon. Decent campground. I'm sure they had flooding there.

They did indeed. Severe damage to the campground, but they were very determined to rebuild and it's even better than before, with some flood mitigation measures, and new landscaping.

We stayed at Riverside RV park 3 weeks before the flood and went up and down the canyon 3 times. It will be great when the road is back to normal. We feel very fortunate to have had the chance to experience it's beauty.

RiverSIDE or RiverVIEW RV Park? RiverVIEW is outside of Loveland near the mouth of the Canyon. RiverSIDE was in the canyon itself and was completely destroyed, absolutely no signs of it ever existing.

  • Update for anyone that may be interested or planning a trip over the Christmas/New Years Holiday...

US 34 in the Big Thompson Canyon will be open beginning 12/23/16 through 01/03/17. They have ceased the blasting activity during this timeframe, but caution should probably be used particularly in the primary construction zone around Cedar Cove, which is the area between MM 77 and MM 81. After 01/03/17, US 34 will be closed again, the construction will get more intense, and it's not scheduled to re-open until Memorial Day weekend 2017. Because of a fairly mild autumn, they are ahead of schedule on this project, and hopefully will open prior to Memorial Day weekend.
