US 441 thru GSMNP construction

(I heard a news report on this, but haven't been able to turn up a link to post.)

One lane of US 441 (Newfound Gap Road) thru the Great Smoky Mountains NP will probably close intermittently for the next few months. They're going to be working on permanent repairs to the slide area from a year ago. The road will remain open, but there may be occasional traffic delays.

This is the direct route thru the park between Gatlinburg and Cherokee. It closes sometimes during the winter anyway, due to snow and ice.

Jim, "I before E (except when eight feisty neighbors seize a surfeit of weighty heifers)."
  • 441 is a nice wide 2 lane, but it is steep and winding...use lower gears on the way down either side.

If I remember correctly, the parking lots at the various stops are rather tight when they are full, which is most of the summer, but if you are there off peak you should be ok.
  • Aside from the repairs how is the 441 for a 35'RV pulling a toad? (Parking?)

There was an article in the Knoxville, TN paper a few days ago.
