US 69/75 in OK and TX

We go to the Texas Hill Country every fall and once (several years ago) took 69/75 from Big Cabin, OK to Denton, TX. Probably the roughest road I've ever had my displeasure to drive towing the RV. It also had a significant number of towns that we had to slow down for and took a lot of time to get through. A trucker friend told me there's a lot of truck traffic because the shippers refuse to pay for the toll on the turnpike. Since then we've been taking the turnpike even though it's roughly 50 miles further and costs an extra $15 in turnpike tolls. I've since gotten an Oklahoma Pikepass which saves a couple of bucks on the tolls and saves a bit of time. But I've been wondering if improvements have been made to the highway or if it's still pretty rough. Just curious.

  • Going through Oklahoma so that you hit US-281 as soon as you can in Texas is a good option if headed for the Hill Country.

Though it is poor in OK, US-69 across northeast Texas is an excellent road, and a good way to miss Dallas on the east side. Either cut back to IH-45 @ Tyler on TX-31, or at Jacksonville on US-79.

Personally, most of the time I'll take US-75/ IH-45 straight through Dallas. But I spent close to 30 years in the DFW area and know the road and lanes to be in early.

Thanks for the update. Looks like it's still just a matter of taking I-35 down through Kansas, or I-44 through Oklahoma, to Oklahoma City and then decide whether to take I-35 on into Texas or I-44 on to Lawton and into Texas on U.S. 281. It's all good road; just a matter of which scenery we want to see again.
