We use our Cap 1 card for purchases, no international transaction fee, and also use it at ATMs. Just started doing this on our last trip to Canada.
We also have a backup amount of cash, just in case.
In the past, we carried a large amount of American dollars and used the banks for exchange as necessary. That wasn't very practical.
Current system works much better.
