No idea on Canadian calls, but we bought the GoPhone SIM card kit, and installed it in an unlocked iphone 5. The experts say all iphones are unlocked, but don't take their word for it; check before you go. Bought the 60 dollar card and the built-in hotspot was a life saver for the drive down, wife was able to connect her ipad to it, and if directions that were given by Garmin 760 were suspect, we could check them out with another source. The iphone required roaming to be enacted to work with the cellular data setting being on. We've accumulated 4 gigs of data/roaming, and now data doesn't work in the Chapala area, not sure why. But it still connects through Telcel for calls.
