Verizon in Alaska?

I am currently on my way through BC on my way to Alaska. I have no cellular at all, nor can I use my Jetpack. Only if I am in an RV park that has Wifi am I able to communicate. Does anyone know if Verizon works in Alaska?

  • We did very well in most places last summer with Verizon, and in fact AT&T did well also.

At that time Verizon roamed on to ACS' system which did provide good service. Verizon has no equipment in Alaska then.

  • Verizon opened service in Alaska last year but it's only 4G service. They didn't want to waste money on additional equipment to support 3G - their answer was for the locals to buy a new phone. Their 4G equipment is in Anch, Fbks, Juneau and maybe Eagle River. So if you buy a 4G phone from them in Alaska, it's fine if you don't go out of town.... Even though I have a new Verizon phone that I didn't really want, I'm about to also buy an ATT phone so that I can use it up the highway between Anch and Fkbs so that I can communicate with people.

And if you have a Galaxy Note 4 4G phone, it will work on Verizon's Alaska network, but don't worry if it works strangely. Verizon doesn't sell them in Alaska because they built this system different than the rest of their stateside systems. Yayyy Verizon.........

Having said that, if you're from out of state, I think they're letting you roam on GCI who bought out ACS' system.

  • It works moderately well, or at least our cell phone did. Our son keep his Verizon plan for several years after moving up there. He changed it a year or two ago.

Verizon does not have many if any towers & isn't the best up there. However, we used ours in the 4 trips up there without much trouble. A little slow in sending photos.
