Visiting Monument Valley

We're planning on going to Monument Valley with our 33' Jayco Jayflight coming from Flagstaff area and we're wondering about the roads getting there. Any steep grades etc? We're headed towards Albuquerque from there - best route? Thanks for advice!

  • Here are a couple of things that many times get overlooked when traveling NE Arizona.
Antelope Canyon: a few miles east of Page, AZ. Probably the easiest way to hike and explore a beautiful "slot canyon". Owned and managed by the Navajo, they will charge you but it's worth it if you've never been in a slot canyon. There are upper and lower canyon areas with different pricing and physical requirements.
Canyon DeChelly National Monument: Near Chinle, AZ. Campground at entrance station. Drive your own vehicle around the north and south arms of the canyon or explore the canyon itself with a Navajo guide. This is a very scenic National Monument more interesting than Monument Valley.
    Have a great trip.
  • The setting for the Navajo's new campground with the link given in the above post is awesome. We've stayed overnight on the site when it was just a parking spot.
  • All the roads are excellent in comparison to what California roads have become. Most of the route will be one lane in either direction but traffic is very scarce and there are plenty of places to pull out. Very few fuel stops so watch your levels. We enjoyed Gouldings RV park, full hookup, restaurants, fuel, and they will arrange tours. Fantastic scenery.
    Happy Trails
  • US-89N, US-160E, US-163E, US-191S, US-64E, US-491S, I-40E will get you from Flagstaff through Monument Valley to Albuequerque. You could also stay on US-64E to US-550E/S to I-25S to Albuquerque. I don't consider any of them to have any stretches of real mountain driving. It has been a while since we have travelled some sections of this route, but the US highways have always been in reasonable condition when we have. You can use the state department of transportation websites to check for construction projects. Arizona DOT, New Mexico DOT, New Mexico Road Advisories, Albuquerque Road Construction.
  • Elevation at Monument Valley is 1800 ft. less than Flagstaff. Lots of two lane road, many ups and downs, but no steep grades that I remember. Cell phone reception is spotty. We stayed a Gouldings,(Indian camping was under reconstruction). Hope you enjoy it as much as we did. If you go on a tour and it's windy, I suggest putting your camera in a zip lock bag to keep the fine red dust out of it. Have fun!
