Well it was a later post that the OP stated that they had a month to make the trip.
That said the trip south down I5 still requires crossing the Siskiyou Pass at the Oregon California border.
Going as far south as I10 should have a fairly smooth drive until they get to about Atlanta, and start going north to the DC area.
