Yeah, it's an antique. But cops aren't really trained to tell the difference between antique guns and modern guns. And irrespective of age they're all designed to inflict harm, right?
NJ's highways are popular for drug traffickers passing through the state - typically from south to north. They have guns. Cops' jobs are perilous. Simple rules minimize their risk. Reading through the article it seemed the guy had a bit of an attitude and was dealt with accordingly.
I travel to the Poconos a lot. I pass the memorial for NJ State Trooper Philip Lamonaco every time. Executed by drug dealers during a traffic stop.

If you're passing through the state in an RV the chances you'll be stopped are slim to none. If you do get stopped, make sure you're abiding by the rules. It's not hard.
