Washington Ferry fares.

Can someone explain this statement from
Ferry Fares top of list to me. We will be traveling from PT to Coupeville

"Passenger and vehicle/driver fares are collected at Port Townsend, while passenger and vehicle/driver fares are collected at Coupeville".

Though it looks like the online purchase is limited to straight forward cases. I think the length and height of an RV will require purchase at the toll booth. https://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/wave2go/

For a car transaction time at the toll booth is minimal - just tell your age (if senior) and hand 'em your credit card. It's all the cars ahead of you in line that take so long!

Buying online is different from making a reservation online.

Have taken this route many times with our fiver. Always booked online. No problem.
If you are planning a summer trip you will want to reserve as soon as they allow.
They do not charge your credit card at time of booking but they will charge a small fee for no shows.

I’m pretty sure the Wave to Go is for frequent rider, or commercial applications. Not for what the OP is talking about. We have done it on line with a 70’ rig.
That reservation link is where you purchase tickets also

I'm reading that to mean that each leg in either direction, you have to pay separately. So, you pay departing from Coupeville, and you pay departing from Port Townsend. At least that's how I'm reading it.

This is correct. If you are only traveling one way, and not round trip, you pay at the port you are leaving from.

If going during the Summer months, it is much easier to purchase your fare on line, as far in advance as they allow, which I believe is 60 days.

When you do it online, you have the option to pay round trip, or one way.
  • On many of the routes, the car and drive pay both ways, while passengers only pay at one end. That's true for example of the busy Edmonds Kingston run. On the San Juan island runs, fairs are collected only at Anacortes.

This PT-Coupeville sentence makes some sense when considered as a deviation from common practice. They are just saying, that in contrast to other runs, everyone pays in both directions.

It sort of confused me on the last Edmonds trip when they asked if I wanted a round trip. I don't recall that being asked before. Anyways I said no. It was a day trip from Edmonds to Port Townsend, with a spur of the moment decision to return via the Coupeville and Clinton boats. I'm not aware of any discount for choosing round trip versus one way (where that's a choice).

    From other route pages:

Passenger and vehicle/driver fares are collected at Edmonds, while vehicle/driver only fares are collected at Kingston.

Passenger and vehicle/driver fares are collected at Anacortes, while no fares are collected at Friday Harbor.

No fares are collected at Vashon Island, while passenger and vehicle/driver fares are collected at Fauntleroy.

In any case, fare calculator should take those details into account, and give the correct fare for the direction that you are traveling.

Regarding reservations on the PT-C run. I've taken it several times without reservations, and the boat was half empty. This last time it was on a winter schedule with only one boat, and 2 hrs between crossings. He warned us at the toll both that without reservations we might not get on. We heard the dock worker conversing with the boat crew, telling them there 3 cars still to be loaded, a Prius C, Element (us) and some other small car. They squeezed us in on the end of the boat.

They like to squeeze small cars into mezzanines and reduced height decks, leaving the center hold free for trucks and tall RVs. They even give a discount for cars under 14 ft. They may load big and small vehicles in separate orders.

    General fare information
  • I have not been there so have no first hand knowledge.

However, in checking their brochure on line, it appears that, in most cases, the trips on the WSF are round trip, WITH THE EXCEPTION of this particular trip.

    Fares
Passenger fares are round trip, with the exception of the Port Townsend/Coupeville route and sailings to/from Sidney, B.C. Please refer to the Passenger and Vehicle Fares brochure (pdf 228 kb) or call our information staff. You can pre-purchase your ferry ticket.

I'm reading that to mean that each leg in either direction, you have to pay separately. So, you pay departing from Coupeville, and you pay departing from Port Townsend. At least that's how I'm reading it.

Hopefully, one of the locals can confirm or correct my reading of this. This would be interesting/good to know, since I've got a long range trip planned for this area.
  • I live here and have no idea what that idiotic sentence means. I'm guessing it means they can collect fares at either location.
In any case, fare is collected when you board and I think you always have the choice of buying a 1 way or round trip ticket.
For car fare, you get the auto and driver. Any other passengers are more.
