Washington State to Vegas via stops in California

After having the first trip under our belts we are looking for suggestions on the route to Vegas returning Oct 31st. to beat the snow. We plan on the I5 from the Canada/USA border to the 505 for S...

I would stay on I-5 to 152 near Los Banos and take 152 over the hill to Watsonville, then up to Santa Cruz. You will beat all the traffic in the San Jose area and bypass 17 which is a narrow, windy road with lousy pull outs.
