Washington to Vermont

Looking at traveling from Washington to Vermont in early December. Will be traveling mainly on RT 80. Anyone make this trip this time of the year? Needing hookups every other night to recharge and LP.
Thanks
Jim
  • Jim,

We used to travel a lot that time of year. (That was not a choice.) December is seldom all that bad once you get east of the Rockies. But it can be. Few campgrounds will be open and those may not have water available. Water can usually be found. Dumps may be closed because there is not water, but many will be open to dump with no clean-up water available.

Many Iowa rest areas have dumps. Most Cabela's have dumps. Cabela's may have water too, but you may have to provide your own hose. Many U-Haul places can fill a coach propane tank. Lots of truck stops have Dumps and Water.

Try to keep fuel and provisions such that you can hold-up a day (or two) as this might make a better choice than pushing into bad weather. Get-Thereitis kills a few people every year.

Do you have a good friend that is either a pilot or a sailor? Pilots and small boat sailors usually have to understand weather better than most and asking for their help will be no imposition.

    Matt
  • x3 or x4 or whatever on it being quite difficult to find open campgrounds, and those finding more than electric (and possibly dump stations/water fill stations) in those that are open. I think there are a grand total of three campgrounds open in the entire state of Vermont in December: Shelburne camping area (in Shelburne, naturally); Crown Point Camping Area (Perkinsville); and Running Bear campground (Ascutney). It's not clear to me how many of these accept transient campers during the winter.

Finding LP isn't difficult, at least around here; many hardware stores etc. sell LP year round. I actually have to drive further from my home to get gasoline for my motorhome than I do to get LP.
  • The weather in Pennsylvania can go either way in December, especially along I-80, the northern part of the state.
The Northeast will be starting or, well into winter.

Keep your rig fueled and stocked in case you get stranded for a day or two.

Chances are you will have no problems, except for the cold weather.
But, you need to be prepared.

    Enjoy your trip.
  • On I-80 once you get to Ohio most of the service areas have parking areas for RV that have electric only. These might help BUT after that there will be no open campgrounds. If you search HARD you might find a State/City camping area that might be open with electric only, but it'll be very hard.
  • Most if not all Northern eastern usa CG's will be closed that time of year.
