I think that if drivers were properly trained instead of our current system of getting a drivers license out of a Cracker Jack box the highways could support speeds of 80 miles per hour in rural areas. Of course towing a recreational vehicle at that speed would be unsafe. But single cars and trucks could operate at those speeds. Having lived in Germany for a few years, where the native population has to go through a two year drivers training process to get a license, such speeds are safe as the drivers are properly trained and disciplined. Left lane banditry is highly discouraged and a citable offense. Running out of fuel is also a citable offense. Here in the states, I think that the road system has in places a lower speed limit than the roads were designed for simply to increase revenue from traffic citations.
