Weed, Ca to Kamloops, BC

We will be towing a 35' 5th wheel trailer to Kamloops, BC in August and the routing shows taking either I-5 or Hwy 97. I was wondering if anyone has information which highway they like better. Hwy 97 is two lane, but I-5 goes through Portland and Seattle, which can be a pain.
  • US97 in Oregon is mostly flat and straight, crossing pine forests at around 4-5000' altitude. The Cascades are visible to the west. In the north things are drier, and there's a drop to sealevel at the Columbia River.

In Washington it crosses three modest passes, and passes through a major agricultural area (orchards, etc). Part of the way is freeway (I82). After Wennatchee is stays at river level.

I84, US365, WA17 can be used to stay away from the passes.

In BC, the Okanogan valley is busier, with more orchards and vacation properties , and towns. 97C is an interstate quality connector to 5 (also divided), but it does climb on to a plateau area around Merritt.
  • I would take hwy 97 as I find it much more scenic....but then maybe I am biased living in Bend.

  • If you take I5 you can route around Portland by using I205. You still would want to avoid rush hour though.
  • 97 is a nice drive, but slow. Drove from Portland to Penticton last springand it was OK. One word of caution if you do use 97. When you hit I90 besure to follow the GPS and turn east toward George and up around dry falls. Much easier road to drive. Otherwise your in some really hilly terrain that will cost you alot of fuel. The border crossing is a real pain on 97. Apparently lots of drugs coming north try to use that crossing.
  • I travel through Seattle and Portland often. Its pretty easy on 5 just make sure you don't hit Seattle at rush hour. If you need to go through Portland at rush hour just take the 205 it will skirt the city.
  • Neither city is too bad on a weekend on I-5; rush hour sux though. For Seattle, try to time it right to hit the express lanes.

Haven't driven 97 but if I was towing the TT I'd probably go that way and avoid trying to climb the Coquehalla.
