Ditto with our Scan Gauge. It is almost always dead on.

We have the Silverleaf system in the rig which reads the fuel use and is very accurate (within a few liters) in estimating how much fuel the tank will take. I usually mention to the attendant that the computer tells me how much it should take and make sure he fills it until it won't take any more. They are quite impressed when they see I was right.

Chris et al: This is not fiction. Read other forums and you will see it happens all the time. I am very careful around the pumps and it has only happened to me twice. Once I turned away and the attendant reset the pump. He claimed it quit working. But he gave me the pump reading and that amount was impossible. I just paid him what the pump said. The other time he tried the bill switcheroo. I protested and he called over his Boss. He insisted that I had to pay or he would call the cops. I simply got in my truck and drove off! BTW: One should never ask for a fill up. The pump can be modified to give false readings from a laptop in the office. One should ask for a specific amount of litres and have the attendant set the pump. That way they cannot change the reading.

I have doors on the RV and the toad with locks on them, before opening the door to the vehicles I go to the pump and look at the numbers, then I let the attendant lift the nozzle that I want and proceed to unlock and take the cap off, some time ago one idiot tried to switch caps on me, by placing the cap on top of the pump and taking the one in his pocket, he did not see me retrieve the cap, big surprise when the cap he had did not fit and I placed mine in the filler.

The other thing that I always do is have the correct amount of money ready and I let them know how much to pump, I have the money in my hand and I hand them one bill at a time and count the amount.

The other time that they tried to scam me was a gas station in Los Angeles CA, the pump had 0000.10 when I reset it, went in to tell the attendant, he really got mad and told me to get out, I lodged a complaint with Weights and Measures, the gas station got a huge fine and was closed for 90 days, scams in Mexico are common so be aware and complaining does not work, they are going to tell you not to be dumb.

I have only had one bad experience at a Pemex in Mexico. South of Cancun by Puerto Aventuras several guys came running over as we pulled up to the pump. They swarmed us washing windows etc. I made the mistake of opening the gas fill door before I got out - one guy was sort of blocking the door. By the time I got out the numbers on the pump seemed quite high - they filled it up and I could see the liters and charges on the pump. Problem is they were so dumb they had run it up to higher than what our tank can hold. They had not erased the numbers from the previous customer by closing out the pump. So they just kept adding. I argued with them and said there is no way my tank holds that much. The leader asked how much I thought the tank was going to take and how much I thought I should pay. I told him and he said OK because he knew I was going to throw a fit and he and his partners in crime could get fired. In years of travel in Mexico that is the only one time any kind of scam was attempted at a Pemex. But I do watch and I do not open the gas fill door until I am out of the car and looked at the zeros. Counting out the payment bills one at a time also helps. You just have to pay attention in case of that very rare occasion someone thinks they can pull the wool over your eyes.

I agree with qtla9111. Never, ever had the switch pulled on me in going on 13 years, full time. Anywhere, from a Pemex to a restaurant to a tienda.

This must be a gringo phenomenon. I belong to Mexican forums, live here and work on the road. It's never occurred and I've only heard about it on this site. Weird.

I never say anything but "fill'er up", pay and leave. I almost always pay with a debit or credit card though but I've asked Mexicans about it and they look at me like, WTH are you talking about.

That was the gist of the story, that the guy told him it was a fifty. Remember to always say out loud the denomination of bills you are giving out: "aqui tiene un billete de cien pesos." Or: "Aqui tiene veinte pesos." Do not just hand him the money and let the attendant count it. Give him one bill at a time. Also, step out of the car and stand by the pump and watch the pump start at zero and watch him actually pump the gas.

I'm missing part of the story. Did he tell you that you had given him a 50?
