Wells, NV to Bishop, CA

I have to make a detour tomorrow and it's a route I've never taken before. Anything I need to know about the drive south from Wells down to Bishop?

Today was rough. We started in Rawlins, Wyoming and the wind was insane. We pulled off the highway to wait it out and thought that it was calm enough, but the wind blew so hard that it blew our bedroom window out. We patched up the window with plastic (it's going to be cold tonight) and then in Utah the rain turned into snow.

I'm hoping for an uneventful day tomorrow and I don't want any surprises.
  • Nevada black highways are great, take 93 to 6 & 6 on into Bishop. There is a 7000' pass on 6 prior dropping down into CA, but should not be a problem. Alternate you could take I-80 to 95 South to 360 W to 6 W, good highways. We have taken this 95, 360 & 6 route many times in our MH towing our toad.

All the locals told us to avoid Reno no matter what. We drove south and it was perfect once the snow stopped.

The route I said cuts off before Reno, been both ways myself pulling 39' 5er and I avoid the 6. Glad it worked out for you

Interstate is probably more conservative... I would go straight down 93 to the 6 into Bishop. Watch the fuel as there are a couple places over 100 miles between fill ups.

Unfortunately you got hit by our first real storm, and it was a windy mess.
Travel should be good tomorrow. It's been a while since I have been down that route, typical 2 lane NV highway but the usual rules apply, just watch speeds near the small towns, buy fuel when you see it, limited cell service from Tonopah to Bishop.
