Winter on Highway 93 South - Twin Falls, ID to Wells, NV

Hi all,

We are currently near Boise and will be making our way to California to visit family. We've driven highway 51 between Winnemucca to Idaho, not fond of taking that drive this time of year due to potential snow and wind plus I will be traveling solo pulling our travel trailer.

Looking to take highway 93 south from Twin Falls,ID to Wells, NV to avoid going back through Salt Lake City. Driving 100-ish miles on a two lane road with a town halfway feels better than the 250 miles on desolate highway 51.

Would you feel safe driving that section of highway 93 during late February when the weather forecast says sunny and clear?

Thank!

Jen

  • We took that road from Twin Falls to Wells, all the way to Ely on a rainy day -- good road, well drained, but there were quite a few vehicles on the road.

Once we were south of Wells, the road got completely empty.
  • As long as it is not snowing, that route is fine. We drive it most every year.

However, in a nice blowing snowfall a few years back it was as scary a drive as you could ask -- and this is from an ex-Canadian used to lots of snow!

    Check the weather!

And when you get to Wells, eat at Bella's. (The diner, not the brothel.) Great road food. (Can't speak for the other establishment.)
  • We drive that road about every year. A few times with the RV. Good road. Couple spots 100 to 140 miles between fuel. If we stop for the night it is either Ely or Vegas.

Just south of Ely we cut down the 6 to 318 to save a few miles. Joins back with the 93 and on into Vegas.

Have driven through in winter a few years ago... hit -10F just south of Ely. No issues.
  • if you mean hiway 95? 93 to wells 80 to winnemucca is a large circle with the same scenery. one sage brush after another
  • It's a good two-lane highway with some hills and high desert features. The biggest issue, as you mentioned, is the weather - if it starts to snow and blow, you will want to go slow or pull over and wait for it to clear.
