Will be towing a 25' Travel Trailer. What are the road conditions in late September or is there an alternate route to consider. Thx
This is an excellent road. Near Susanville there is a long hill but it is easily doable with your 25 foot trailer. Very little traffic. I always travel 139 between Klamath Falls and Susanville. - Us_out_WestExplorerIf your destination is Susanville then 139 is the route.
There is an alternate that is a better road, wider with shoulders, smoother and not the big climbs. 139 to 395...but it bypasses Susanville coming out quite a few mile South of town. This route also adds about 30 minutes and about 35 miles.
We've gone both ways. - ramyankeeExplorerAs a youngin' I was raised on 139 South of Newell. We homesteaded there in 1949.
Good road. At the T at Canby go left on 299 into Alturas (20 miles) and right onto 395. In Standish continue straight and 395 will interchange onto 36 and right into Susanville. Have not been Standish to Susanville since the mid 60's when I was at Lassen Junior College.
I like 395 as it is just better hiway.
Tuesday we will be heading North that direction into Coeur d'Alene. Will be staying in Likely going up... - NaioExplorer II395 through Alturas is mainly flat farm country. I drove it this year.
189, IIRC, is mountainous (but fine). Don't do what I did and bend your tie rod before the long downhill. To this day I cannot believe it showed no symptoms until we got to town... where we suddenly lost steering. - lbrjetExplorerWe just drove from Susanville to Klamath Falls last Thursday. The road is not in bad shape and no real steep grades although there are some ups and downs. The steepest and longest will be coming into Susanville. Nothing to worry about. The road is pretty skinny for probably 60 miles closest to Susanville. It is a pretty drive.
- dave54NomadAlthough possible, a fall storm that early would be quite unusual. Late Sept is normally warm sunny days and cool nights. Fall colors should be starting.
The climb north out of Susanville is about a mile long, then flattens out. Good road. No services Susanville to Adin.
Fuel is available at the casino. On tribal land so no state gas tax. Several cents per gallon cheaper. Most of the gas stations on Main St are not big rig friendly. - 4aSongExplorerThank you everyone, your inputs were very informative and helped us making a decision to travel 139 with my TT.
- BillinwoodlandExplorerIf you want a dynamite burger, stop in Adin at the "Oney." Its a frosty style pit stop with great burgers. The local hardware store, nearby, has some cool knick knacks. If you are looking for an overnight spot, the Eagle Lake RV park is a good stopping place. Its in Spaulding, about 10 miles off 139, and the fishing at Eagle Lake should be excellent in September.
- BendOrLarryExplorerWatch for deer early and late in the day. The road from the turn off to Alturis to the Oregon boarder is under construction and rough, at least it was a last month.

That is good news. Last trip on 139 it was beginning to show its age..
Also there is a nice little coffee house on the southern end of Alturas on the west side of the road.
