West Deerfield Rd Black Hills South Dakota

We're leaving Devils Tower Monday morning and heading to Hill City SD to check out Mount Rushmore. I'm looking at the map and see a road name West Deerfield Road will take me from the Wyoming/South Dakota line near Four Corners Wy. to Hill City Sd. where we will camp out for the night. I couldn't find any road conditions like size limits, and surface conditions but I did find it is supposed to be an interesting road.

Thanks Dave and Kandi
  • Looks alright to me on google earth paved runs along a river or stream so fairly level. Go for it.
  • Yep. It looks like it's worth a try. I just don't like long gravel roads.
    Thanks
  • GMaps has streetview only for the end near Hill City. From the Sat View, West Deerfield appears to be gravel (no painted center line), while Deerfield and S. Rochford appear to be paved.

Malo Rd near 4 corners also appears to be gravel with similar width.

If I'm right, that's about 20 miles of gravel, and 20 paved.

The route via US16 is longer, but has the same time estimate, implying higher average speed.
  • I called a hotel on milo rd. And the gent told me it is gravel and turns to blacktop just before Hill City. Rte 16 looks like the Rte I'll take.
    Thanks..
  • U.S. 16 is a good road. I ran it twice last July and Aug from Rapid City to Moorcroft
