But if you choose not to take it here's what to do based on lots of sad experience:
If you don't already have it, get Google Maps so that you have real-time traffic information. Plan on taking the I-610 loop around the north side. It's your best bet at that time of day. If Google Maps says that's jammed, look at using the I-610 south loop, or the outer loop - the Sam Houston Tollway - either north or south.
An alternative to Google Maps for real-time traffic info is Houston Transtar. They have an app as well as a website.
