Here's our favorite scenic route heading east from Yellowstone/Grand Teton.
Exit Yellowstone via the south entrance to Grand Teton NP. Stay a few days if you can, it's our favorite place. Take route 26 out of Grand Teton to Riverton then route 26/20 to I25 at Casper. Route 26 goes over the Togwotee Pass with great mountain scenery plus red rock formations further east. In early June there may still be snow at the top of the pass. An alternate would be to get off 26 north of Riverton and take route 287 to Lander. A few miles west of Lander is
Sinks Canyon State Park. From Lander you can take route 789 to Riverton to join 26/20 to Casper or continue southeast on 287 to Muddy Gap and then east on route 220 to Casper. A possible side trip off 287 would be to take route 128 south to the turn off for
South Pass City, then return to 287. Along route 220 you will pass Oregon Trail sites including
Split Rock, Devils Gate and
Independence Rock. From Casper take I25 south and get off onto route 26 again to Guernsey for the
Oregon Trail Ruts and Register Cliff. Further down 26 is
Fort Laramie Historic Site. Continue on 26 past Scotts Bluff, Chimney Rock and Ash Hollow Oregon Trail sites to join with I80 at Ogalalla. We actually prefer to use route 30 eastbound from Ogalalla to avoid the heavy truck and speeding car traffic on I80.
At North Platte is the
Bailey Yard of the Union Pacific RR, the largest rail yard in the world. The Golden Spike Tower there affords an elevated view of the operations.
