West Yellowstone to Rapid City, advice please

Next week we will be in West Yellowstone for 10 days then head to Rapid City, SD. Depending on your recommendations, would it be better to drive through (34' fifth wheel) Yellowstone park or around north? Other major or must sees in that area is also appreciated. Thank you

  • You are welcome. Enjoy. If you have the time, go through the museum in Cody and eat dinner at the Irma Hotel. You will see the beautiful ornate bar that Buffalo Bill brought over from Europe. They also have nightly wild west shows in the street. We ate dinner first, then sat outside and watched the gun fight. It was very enjoyable. Parts of the museum were fascinating and others were not, so we saw what we wanted and skedaddled fast past the parts we didn't want to see.
  • Devil's Tower! And if you're going up and over the Bighorn's, Burgess Junction. It's at the top of the world. Well, almost.
  • Thank you all! Any other suggestions for sights we shouldn't miss (other than Cody if we go around)?
  • I'd check Here first for closing dates of facilities and roads in YNP this year.
At those latitudes and altitudes, road closings for snow or construction happen early.
  • Howdy!

If you haven't been to Cody it is worth the stop for a couple of days if not more.

I would go straight east through the park stopping at Cody

Same. You can take the interstate around from Cody, or over the Bighorn Mountains like we did one year.
