Along the border they want dollars. Further down they want pesos. I many cases toll booths won't take dollars. I can't remember now but there was once something about the first toll south of Nogales not taking dollars - this before you even get your permits. We once made a special trip to a bank in Phoenix to get pesos and paid for the privilege - we won't be doing that again. For the most part you won't need pesos until you can get to a bank ATM somewhere near the border depending on where you cross.
