What's Going On with Skagway RV Sites?

I have been trying to reach Pullen Creek RV Park for about 3 weeks--with no response. Discovered today their website is shut down and got a voice mail message again. So, I called the Convention and Tourism bureau to see what they knew. They told me that had also been trying to reach them for some time--and they knew others were as well. They suggested I call Garden City RV Park. When I called there they were already booked for July 16 and 17th! Had no suggestions other than to come to town and hope for the best. Not exactly what I wanted to hear.

Hard to believe that there is nothing in Skagway this far in advance. Guess we may change our ferry arrangements to get off in Haines, stay there and then head north from there and let the cruise boats have Skagway. We were there 10 years ago--don't really need to go back again and fight the crowds.

Have others had the same issues or does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • If you stay in Haines we liked Haines Hitch-Up RV Park. You can walk to town from the park.
  • My suggestion would be to take the ferry from Haines to Skagway, spend the rest of the day there, then drive to the RV park in Carcross to spend the night. Or you can reverse that trip when driving up the Alaska Highway.

Nothing special about the Carcross RV park--gravel/dirt pull-thru sites separated by horizontal telephone poles and no trees--but it has hookups with 30A power, showers, and a store/cafe/gas station. In other words, a somewhat better than average Alaska/Yukon/northern BC RV park!

BTW, I agree that the Haines Cutoff is much more spectacular (and much longer) than the South Klondike Highway.
  • We passed through Skagway last August and the campground pickens have gotten very slim. Place we had stayed at 5 years ago was closed . We stayed at Garden City. Scale of 1-0 its about a 4. There was another closer to the ferry but I could nor figure out the entrance. Summer tourist employees seem to be the larger rv occupant
  • Wonder if these two cases might be related to the recent news that Alaska Marine Ferry services may be cut significantly this summer, which may mean that all of this is a moot point if our reservations for July get canceled. Sounds like this may get really interesting.

Right now, I am much more upset about the potential for having my reservations canceled than I am for not getting to go to Skagway. We were there 10 years ago--didn't particularly enjoy fighting my way through all of the cruise ship crowd, so to miss it this trip won't be the end of the world.

But--to not get to travel to all of the places we were wanting to visit in SE Alaska just makes we sick.
  • Getting off in Haines is an excellent idea - the Haines Highway is at least as impressive as the South Klondike. There's lots of great boondocking up in the White Pass if you really want to come that way, though.

Another significant Skagway business has dropped off the map in the past weeks too - Sourdough Car Rental. Very odd in both cases. Maybe both companies made all the millions they need and just don't feel like opening this year...
