- Desert_CaptainExplorer IIIThere is a lot of construction on 60 east that starts just west of Superior {just got back from a nice motorcycle ride after having lunch in Superior}. Very narrow and 25 mph through the lengthy construction zone. Further north, near Top of the World, there is another major construction project. It will be slow, single lane and the pavement is seriously torn up in places. There are often long delays depending on what they are trying to accomplish on any given day.
Check with ADOT for daily updates, sometimes they leave it open on the weekends but I think you will be a lot happier on 87. Lots of serious hills, especially up the grade into Payson and of course the Mogollon Rim but if you have enough truck 87 is enough road.
:C - lbrjetExplorerWe like the Payson to Heber to Holbrook route better. 87 is all four lane into Payson and some of 260 is four lane as well. The Salt River Canyon is no picnic on 60, but very scenic.

Steep and a little twisty through the canyon but with this big 6.7 Powerstroke it is no problem. You wouldn't be the only one pulling an RV up through there. I always see RV'ers on 60.
- dapperdanExplorerWe were in the Phoenix area last October, spent time up in Greer with my wife's sister and her hubby. We took 87 out of Phoenix and came back on 60. We'll be in Apache junction in a week, on our way out we'll be taking 87 north. 60 is too chopped up for my liking especially pulling the fifth wheel!
Five or six years ago years ago while visiting my S-I-L she advised us to take 60 up through Globe on our way out of town because it's such a beautiful drive. It was beautiful but I wasn't expecting the grades involved. They usually do it in their Mazda Miata! :B Told her to try it pulling a fifth wheel sometime. LOL
Just my two cents .......
