Wildfires in Canada - haze in Colorado

We have slightly hazy skies and the smell of smoke in the Denver area today. But, unusual for this time of year, there are no major wildfires in our area right now--too much rain this spring.

The news says the haze is due to fires west of Great Slave Lake in Canada. The smoke hit Montana several days ago and apparently is drifting southeast along the mountain front. We are more than ~1,000 miles from the northern border of Alberta, so there must really be some big fires up there.

What is it like in northern Alberta and BC? Is it affecting traffic on the Alaska Highway? How about the Yukon? Maybe Sue T. can provide an update.
  • We saw a little smoke down here in the West Kootenays the other day, but clear sky's since then.

  • Interesting map, Sue. Looks like Edmonton and maybe Calgary may be in the smokiest area.

Interesting too that the SE US and Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, as well as the NW Territories, seem to be getting hit by many more wildfires than the normally much drier Western US.
  • I'm in Glenwood Springs (W. Colorado) and it's been bad for several days, but seems to have subsided some today as the monsoons begin to move in.
  • Just rechecked the smoke map because I thought there was smoke in the air here now. Sure enough, the smoke has moved west and we have it now.
  • We had a couple of smoky/hazy days here in Regina. Mostly passed this morning but on Tuesday night it was bad enough it actually even smelled like smoke.
  • We are 65 miles east of Dawson Creek. No smoke today. Someone said it was quite smoky at Grande Prairie, coming from the fire SE of Tumbler Ridge, BC.

We were over in BC west of Dawson Creek all week. There was some smoke from a fire in the Hudson's Hope area. The Moberly Lake provincial park was closed and briefly, the highway. Smoke varies with the wind direction.
