WV Turnpike

Any hints towing the turnpike? Going south to Roanoak area from southern Ohio. Never towed on the turnpike. Thanks

  • Fuel before the toll section. Some tight access on the exits including one with no access back onto the road.
  • Getting to the turnpike might be the bigger problem. I-64 is under major reconstruction between Milton and Nitro. The speed limit in the entire construction zone is 55 and it is enforced. The planners did not realize that a lot of people actually drive on this stretch. But whatever you do, stay on the interstate. The alternate routes are worse. Also the turnpike is going to be widened from 2 to 3 lanes in Beckley
  • You should have no problem what so ever. As previously mentioned, pay the tolls using the far right lane if possible. It has the most room.

And once you get off the mountain on I-64 in Virginia, it's pretty smooth sailing after that. Just turn south on I-81 at Lexington. No more mountains to climb.

  • We drove that section just once in April of last year ! After flying up and purchasing our Class C in Ohio, we were headed to the Staunton Va area. Having never driven an RV in the mountains (or at all) I found that section to be no issue. We actually spent the night at the Beckley Service plaza ( after a recommendation from this forum). Sandstone Mt was also a non issue ( even for this Flat lander) and we saw some pretty areas through there !

You should have no issues, just enjoy the trip !
  • Drive it several times a year. As said just watch your speed and use the far right line through the toll booths.
  • Take your time and enjoy. Not a difficult drive. You will pay a Toll of $ 2.50 two times.
  • Go to the far right booth at the toll booths, more room., Pay attention to the curve signs.dont speed...speed limit I think is 60..no need to go any faster.have drove it a lot over the years, only one ticket...yes I deserved it, back in the 70's only 25.00

After you pass Beckley, you have sandstone mountain, 7 1/2 miles of 7 degree mountain, don't overheat the brakes
  • It's not bad except for the section immediately south of the first toll booth. That section is likely the most windy section you will encounter. The stopping every 20 miles is a PITA but I think they finally go on board with ezpass.

I did read recently where I-77 Northbound in VA. is going to have some construction that may hinder a return so you might want to check into that.

My last trip on the WV turnpike was Northbound in my Mini Cooper and the section I mentioned above was my favorite place to drive until mr. police officer thought I was having too much fun. (in my defense --- well, there is no defense I was flying through there) . I paid my ticket a few days later and now tow the car behind me at a nice steady pace.
