WY 220/287 from Casper to Rawlins

We are a 36ft Super C towing a Kar Kaddy. I am looking for guidance on the 120 miles between Casper and Rawlins in late May. The alternate to get to I-80 west from the Black Hills is a long way south on I-25 to Cheyenne. Living in the west I am used to well maintained two lane state highways but don't like Ortega Hwy in SoCal or CA 49 north from Jackson to I-80 in the gold country. Some twisty spots are OK but miles of 15/20 mph tight turns with rock walls or nothing to the right I would rather state away from. Thanks for your help.
  • Thanks, high desert is good, sounds like a reasonable route with nothing tight and crazy. Look forward to the trip.
  • check out the web cameras

I've driven from Rawlins to Three Forks lots of times. I doubt the route from Three Forks to Casper would be much different. Rural 2 lane highway 65mph high desert land scape. At Bairoil you cross the continental divide but not much there. In the winter we have to go to Rawlins instead of going over south pass which also goes over the continental divide. Much easier even in the winter north of Rawlins. Wyoming is the indian word which means high desert plains. With that in mind make sure you fuel up in Casper. Resonably priced fuel hard to find in those small towns. I like to use my head lights on those 2 lane highways.
  • WY 220/287 is a decent two lane hwy. Pulled my 32' fifth wheel over over it two years ago, the first week of October, from Casper to Rawlins. Nothing like Hwy 49 north in Cali. If you get a chance, I have heard that the frontier prison in Rawlins is a good tour if you have time and can find a place to park your rig.
    Happy trails
