Wyoming Hwy 16

Going from Buffalo to Ten Sleep on Hwy.16, Powder River Pass with 40' RV and towing a Jeep. Mountain Directory says it's a pretty good road with curves and steep grades.
Anybody been on it?

  • one of the most beautiful drives in Wyoming just take your time and enjoy it
  • I pulled my 36ft fiver on that route a couple years ago. Not a big deal as long as you start the downgrades at slower speeds, in lower gears.

If I remember correctly, taking Hwy 16 towards Yellowstone is generally thought to be easier for RVers then taking Hwy 14.

    * If you're a 'Longmire' TV show fan, you may want to plan your trip so you can be in Buffalo during Longmire Days !
  • I had more trouble going up than going down. But your rig might have more oomph than mine.
  • Your 40' MH will do just fine on the road - ours did. Get in low gear before going down and you will only use your brakes a little. It'll be over before you know it! :)
  • Yep! Been on it many times... Only live about 40 miles from Ten Sleep. As others stated, it's a bit steep with switchbacks near the end before dropping into Ten Sleep. Also, as stated... Believe the signs! If you start out with too much speed, you can get the brakes pretty warm getting it " whoa'd up"! A beautiful drive, but respect it!
Going the other way, into Buffalo is visually misleading. A quite long, moderately steep, few curves road. Several years ago, an older couple in a motor home, burned up the brakes, went thru the intersection into some buildings. One was killed (wife I think). Also, use caution when in hilly/mountainous areas. memtb
  • Been 4 years since we took 16 to Ten Sleep and as you start down to Ten Sleep I think the sign said 6% down grade next 23 miles. They weren't kidding, cooled brakes off several times. Made me wish for an exhaust brake something fierce. lol

Mountain Directory is correct. It is not difficult. Something of a long decline from the top of the pass down to Ten Sleep, but not overly steep.

One thing to be aware of...this is a very popular ride for the motorcycle crowd, so just a heads up to watch for them, both coming at you as well as coming up behind you...and passing you. There are also a goodly number of dude/guest ranches on the Buffalo side of the pass, as you're going up from Buffalo, so there will be a bit more traffic on that side, as they seem to be quite popular.
  • we have crossed it several times, both ways, without a problem, but yes, there is a long downgrade going east, with lots of curves, but the highway is a good one.
  • Yep... steep and curvy use Jake brake and don't be in a hurry. Buff down is the easy way. Cool scenery stop for pics.
